Remembering the only female NYPD officer who perished on 9/11 saving others

moira-smith-via-ny-daily-newsThis is Moira Smith. She is the only female NYPD officer who passed away during 9/11.

These past few days I’ve found myself watching documentaries and reading stories about the people who experienced that terrible day. Her story touched me. She was married with a two-year-old daughter and, like many first responders, put her life aside to save others.

Moira was at the base of the first tower to fall. She’s remembered as “the woman with the flashlight.” She was using hers to guide people outside the building so they wouldn’t gather to look at the devastation outside or get hit by a falling body.

This picture of her was captured by New York Daily News photographer Corey Sipkin on that day. After saving this man she went back in to save more.

2,996 people were killed and more than 6,000 others were wounded on 9/11, but I our whole country felt the impact.

Read one man’s memory of her from that day.
