“BAMF”

“BAMF” is prison lingo for “BadAss Mother F…r” and here’s the story behind it.

When I was a little girl I desperately wanted my father, who was a corrections officer, to bring me to work with him for “father-daughter work day.” All the other little girls at my elementary school were so excited to share their experiences and I wanted too as well. However, my dad would NOT let me come with him. Ever.

Later, I asked him if I would “survive” in prison.

He said “Nope, you’re too sweet.”

I remember saying “No, I’m not! I’m the oldest child. I would totally be in charge of the prison.”

He said again, “No, to be ‘in charge.’ you have to be a BAMF aka a “BadAss Mother F…r.”

I said “I can be that.”

Ever since then, Anytime  I’ve been nervous or scared or worried about something. (A new job, meeting new people, trying something new, going some place possibly dangerous.) I say to myself “you’re a BAMF.” It makes me stronger. It’s a reminder to be confident and proud of who I am and all I  have to offer. We all have a BAMF in us. Let’s find it, celebrate it and “GO BAMF.”

What does “BAMF” mean?
